Ivy Dyes Her Hair...Well Not By Herself...

Ivy is a pretty amazing kid! Like most little girls she loves to have long hair. We would curl it, braid and brush it. She got the part of Randy in A Christmas Story the end of last year and very bravely gave up her shoulder length hair when we realized a wig was not going to work if we were going to convince the audience that she was a little boy. The hair was a success as was her performance. Audience members who did not know her were sure she was a little 5 year old boy. She got used to her hair but told me that she wanted to grow it out again. Then she was cast as Tam, the little Asian son of Kim, in Miss Saigon. Her hair was fine in length, whew! we wouldn't have to cut it (just bangs, which she was excited about) but now the issue was color. Her hair was too light. So we tried a wig and it looked a bit comical. Then we tried a dark hair spray. It got all over everything and did not have the shine of normal hair. I asked her how she would feel if we dyed her hair dark. I explained that we would use a semi-permanent color that would fade, but we would have to be patient as we worked to get it back to it's natural color. She was already on board with the bangs and the idea of dying her hair seemed cool. So she agreed!

Here is Ivy at the salon after out first attempt at dying her hair. We were too careful and the color didn't take to her healthy hair. It turned out a pretty auburn. We went back the next day and tried again. It worked!!Here she is as Tam in the play. This is her buddy Michelle who was in the ensemble, and helped care for Ivy backstage! Isn't Ivy just adorable! She was so good in the role. She had no lines, but was on stage a lot and had to react to many dramatic scenes. The audience and cast were in love with her. She is a natural on stage. I am both thrilled and scared for her! haha
