Tamari Vocal Recital Series: Happy Working Song

At the end of July I did a vocal recital for close family and friends AND for myself...let me explain. I have been a singer my whole life. At age nine I performed the Rainbow Connection at a school talent show and got a standing ovation! From then on performing was a passion!!! I had various vocal teachers throughout my life and did very well. In 1999 my brother Ben died and that event along with the circumstances surrounding his death caused me to lose my singing voice for a time. When I started singing again it was NOT the same voice. I struggled with many issues, mainly a cracking/yodel thing that would happen spontaneously. I had NO control over this weird phenomenon and it was very devastating to me. During SGMT's production of Beauty and the Beast in 2006 I was playing Belle and the director, Ryan Norton, could tell something was not right with my voice. He introduced to me to Speech Level Singing and also encouraged me to go to an ear, nose and throat specialist and get scoped. From that procedure I learned that I had acid reflux and that it had caused some minor vocal chord damage. I went through proper treatment to get that healed up and I started using SLS as my new singing technique to help me mend my vocal chops. While I was doing Les Miserables at Tuacahn in 2008 I started taking lessons from Brodie Perry who is a certified SLS teacher and a good friend. I worked very hard for the next couple years getting rid of some psychological baggage that was connected to my voice not working right and then just some bad habits I had acquired after so many years of singing. The summer of 2010 Brodie put me on scholarship and one of my goals was to do a recital in which I would display my versatility as a singer. I sang from many different genres and would like to now run a series of blog posts displaying some of the songs I did. They are not perfect, but I want to share with you where I am now and then in a year I would like to do another recital and see how far I have come. I am LOVING this whole vocal education thing! I have learned so much from a method that really works for me. So, here is the first song I would like to share with you, Happy Working Song from the Disney movie Enchanted...
