Dark Energy: A Comedy

Please! Don't worry, this is all make-up. Just smoke and mirrors as they say. I had the tremendous opportunity to work on a film project with some of my actor friends here in Salt Lake City. (make-up artist: Me! Thanks, theater make-up class!)
The film, written by Javen Tanner, is called Dark Energy. I play the role of a woman who was beaten by her husband and her friends decide to take matters into their own hands. It's a comedy, naturally!
Having worked on stage for most of my life it has been interesting to transition into film work. My motivation is still based in truth, but the body, and voice have a more subtle approach.
And with film, it is broken up into moments. We filmed all of the hospital shots in one day. Which in the case of this story meant we filmed the beginning of the movie and the end of the movie all in one day.
An actor has to have a great deal of focus and preparation going into a days shooting so that they know what part of their arc the character is at in the story and be able to play that. The mic is right there to pick up every nuance of the voice. And since this is a visual art form the director, Christy, got permission from Javen to edit the script when no words were needed. It was cool to see the process through from table read to filming and see what changed in the script and what ideas were brought forward by all parties that made the script come to life. This experience was quite the collaboration. It was freeing to see something come together so quickly and know that it was still quality due to the talent in the room. (Pictured: Lauren, Colleen, and Tiffani)
Our fearless leader, Christy. She is so smart and had a strong vision for this film. Because she is also an actress, she was patient, kind and had a shorthand with us when giving direction.
Tyson was so good at achieving Christi's vision. He has so much experience and would work quickly to get the angles needed for each shot. He has a great attitude and you can tell he is like a kid in a candy store working with his equipment.

All in all, it was a great learning experience for me. I felt like I was in a safe environment where I could ask questions and learn a ton from those around me who had more experience. I can't wait to see the final film.
